Korea Faces Floods and Tidal Waves

Reports received by the Presbyterian board of missions in the early part of 1924 detailed a grim aftermath of natural disasters.

In the latter part of 1923, Korea had suffered heavy damage from floods and tidal waves. A significant part of the country had been inundated, impacting thousands of homes. In addition to the floods, the country grappled with storms leading to the total destruction of rice fields, leaving no food yield behind.

One particularly destructive force was a giant tidal wave that surged inland, engulfing entire villages. This wave also reshaped the country’s geography, creating a new beach line 50 to 100 feet farther inland from the original shoreline.

Many Presbyterian churches were either washed away or damaged by winds and storms.
