Seismic Tremors Shake Italy

In January 1924, an earthquake left the province of Pesaro e Urbino in Italy in a state of disarray and fear. The seismic activity, characterized by harsh and incessant shocks, led to significant disruption in the lives of the local populace.

The coastal city of Ancona was particularly affected by these tremors. In a single day, as many as fifteen seismic tremors were recorded. Adding to the hardship was the fall of snow which adversely impacted the comfort of the inhabitants.

The quake also prompted large-scale evacuations in the inland towns of Senigallia and Mondolfo due to fears of building collapses. Residents of Mondolfo reported a massive fissure surfacing in the vicinity of Ponte Sasso, emitting smoke and fire. This sparked speculations among the locals regarding the possibility of volcanic activities.

The province of Urbino was not spared from the devastation, with many of its villages experiencing intense aftershocks resulting in severe infrastructural damage.

These seismic disturbances were not limited to land but were also experienced at sea. Reports from seafarers indicated notable anomalies at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea.
