Basketball Teams in Buffalo Prepare for Games

In January 1924, Buffalo, New York, was preparing for a basketball face-off between two teams of the time.

The Buffalo-based team, the Hewitts, had been in the limelight. Their speculated cancellation of certain planned events in Olean had left many followers disappointed. However, the Buffalo team’s management refuted these speculations and announced the next game between the Hewitts and the Celtics of New York – the prevalent world champions of basketball. This match was to occur on the next Thursday night at the State Armory.

Simultaneously, arrangements for another anticipated game were underway. Technical High was preparing to compete against the Canisius High School basketball team, scheduled for that afternoon on the Tech high court. Canisius was stepping into this game with the momentum of four straight wins and was expected to challenge the Mechanics considerably.

Both teams were undergoing thorough preparations under their respective coaches – Herb Sprickman of Canisius and Braun of Technical. Despite an apparent confidence exhibited by both sides, the final selection of players was still undecided.
