A Series of Robberies Makes Headlines

In 1923, cities across the United States reported an increase in criminal activities. The surge in crime was particularly noticeable in New York City, where the police were faced with a tide of robberies, burglaries, and violent deeds.

One of the incidents reported was the attack on a 70-year-old woman in Brooklyn. The woman was robbed of her handbag, which contained $1,600 worth of jewelry. The criminals committed this act in a lonely section of Bay Ridge and managed to escape before the police could initiate a search.

In another incident, a jewelry store on William Street in Buffalo was targeted by thieves who smashed the store window with a brick and stole watches, diamonds, and other pieces of jewelry. This act was committed in broad daylight.

New York City also witnessed a surge in violent crimes. In one such incident, two brothers, Barlow Morris Diamond and his younger brother Joseph, were charged with homicide in connection with the holdup and murder of two employees of the West End bank in Brooklyn.
