Former Law Enforcement Officers Turn To Crime
In their January 20, 1924, editions, two periodicals, The Buffalo Courier Express and The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, detailed an event that sent shockwaves through the city of Chicago. Three men, equipped with knowledge and skills to uphold the law, were the central suspects in its transgression.
The three individuals in question were former detectives Hugh Engle, formerly from Burns, and Gleason S. Walker, who had served in the Pinkerton Agency. Together with Joseph Zimmer, a policeman discharged a day before the report, these men, once servants to the law, were its potential breakers.
Reports suggest that these former law enforcers turned to illicit pursuits, exploiting their training and previous professions to deceive the public. Particularly, they allegedly coerced Mrs. Ida Jacobson into letting them into her residence under false pretenses. They then reportedly ransacked her home and stole jewels amounting to 3,000 dollars.
Evidently, Mrs. Jacobson was not their only victim. Reports also indicate a series of hold-ups and jewelry thefts carried out by Engle and Walker often after-theater.
