A High-Profile Murder Case Becomes More Complex

The murder of a prominent real estate mogul in the Bronx, New York, made news in January 1924.

Edward H. Dolge, a resident of Mount Vernon, was taken down by a fatal gunshot wound at the Hunts Point Avenue station of the New York, Boston & Westchester Railroad. Initially perceived to be a mere holdup, the case grew complex with the revelation that he had been tailed and had been seen in the company of a woman.

Charles S. Neilson, an ex-officer and then an attendant at the Veterans Hospital, relayed pivotal information on to the police. He identified the woman as Mrs. Minnie Pachie and said that he had seen her quite often during the time that Dolge had been on a business trip to Brazil. The introduction of this new identity to the case cast new shadows and brought forth fresh theories to explore.

The motive behind Dolge’s murder remained elusive; therefore, his wife was brought in for questioning as part of police’s investigation. It was unclear if she was informed of Dolge’s female acquaintance or of his rendezvous on the fateful Friday night.

Details of Dolge’s last moments sketch a harrowing scene. After paying his cab fare and setting off towards the station, Dolge was confronted by an individual alleging him of defrauding the driver. Seeking to thwart a confrontation, Dolge decided to retrace his steps, only to encounter another man on the stairs. This encounter quickly escalated into violence, culminating in Dolge being shot in the abdomen.

Despite the prompt response from nearby patrol cars, the culprits managed to elude capture in a black touring car. The indistinct gray background of the 1924 New York license plate on the car put paid to hopes of tracking them down.

Dolge was then rushed to Lincoln Hospital where he narrated the incident to Assistant District Attorney Kerr before eventually succumbing to his injuries. In his last moments, he was able to share a parting gesture with his wife, expressing regret at causing her inconvenience.
