Bandits Caught after High-Speed Chase

In February 1924, two young men named Victor Garrity and Harry Glassman were involved in a robbery attempt in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. The account begins with the duo breaking into a tailor shop in the middle of the night, after stealing a motorcar from a local garage.

Their activities did not go unnoticed by the police, who observed the theft at the tailor shop. A high-speed chase ensued that lasted for about a mile. The suspects raced at incredible speeds and exchanged gunshots with the police on the busy streets of Brooklyn.

The suspects, now cornered and outgunned, turned their stolen vehicle against a railroad’s wall at Hinsdale Avenue and surrendered, marking the conclusion of a city-wide chase that had the entire community of Brooklyn in suspense.

Upon their arrest, both Garrity and Glassman were charged with the theft of the motorcar and the unlawful possession of over $1,000 worth of clothes from the tailor shop. It was later discovered that both had previous records and had served terms for grand larceny and robbery.
