Earthquake Damages Tokyo and Yokohama
On January 16, 1924, newspapers reported the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama in Japan were taken by surprise when an earthquake struck the region in the early morning at approximately 5:45 o’clock. The quake was so forceful that it threw residents from their beds, and caused walls to shake and structures to collapse. The severity of the quake was likened to the disastrous earthquake that had occurred in September the previous year.
During the quake, the lighting systems failed, dramatically amplifying the horror and confusion. The violent vibrations of the earthquake were potent enough to bring down robust stone walls and paralyze the streetcar system. In Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel, guests were forced to vacate the premises in their nightclothes for their safety.
The aftermath of the quake brought about further reports of destruction which included a passenger train in the proximity of Yokohama that was derailed. Yokohama experienced considerable damage with the collapse of hundreds of houses, and disruptions to waterworks and piers. These disruptions imposed further complications in the already daunting task of recovery and working towards normalcy.
In response to the catastrophe, Japanese authorities quickly implemented measures to restore normal services and improve the situation. Restoration of the damaged light, streetcar, and telephone services in Tokyo was expedited.
