25-year-old heiress Dorothy Arnold vanished in New York City on the afternoon of December 12, 1910, while out shopping. Her family initially hired private investigators to locate her, so Dorothy’s disappearance wasn’t reported to the police or made public until 6 weeks later. 

Despite the eventual publicity surrounding the case, Dorothy was never found. What happened to her remains a mystery, though her father ultimately came to believe she had been murdered.
