England’s “Most Beautiful Woman” Arrives in U.S.

In December 1923, Lady Diana Duff Cooper, formerly Lady Diana Manners, arrived in New York City. Known as one of England’s most beautiful women, Lady Diana, a daughter of the Duke of Rutland and a close friend of the British royal family, embarked on her journey to the United States aboard the Aquitania for a role in a theatrical production, “The Miracle”.

Upon her arrival, a group of society members and individuals from the theatrical world met her at the pier. “Tell me,” she said upon her arrival in New York, “is New York always like this? I expected to see a whirling, furious city. And it isn’t at all.”

Lady Diana, besides being a notable figure in London’s social circles, also tried her hand at acting, making her first appearance on the stage nervous yet excited. Lady Diana would portray her first role as Madonna in “The Miracle”.

She was observed wearing a stunning Russian costume which was very much in vogue in England at the time, setting a trend for the women in London.

Notable arrivals such as Lady Diana added an interesting edge to the social and cultural fabric of New York City.
