Tuberculosis Pledges for Research Not Yet Fulfilled

On January 26, 1924, an announcement was made by Miss Almeria S. Keyes, secretary of the Buffalo Tuberculosis Association, concerning an unfulfilled obligation on the part of the residents of Erie County. It was disclosed that approximately 20,000 residents had been sent Christmas seals, a small decorative sticker sold to raise money for charity. However, these residents had not sent in their returns promptly.

Through this announcement, Keyes urged the public to fulfill a duty that should ideally have been completed during the holiday season, or at least before the start of the New Year. Despite this delay, the Association remained hopeful. A few days before the announcement, cards were sent out with the expectation that they would prompt satisfactory returns. This was part of an effort to reach a necessary goal that would balance the Association’s budget.

During this time, $38,080 had been amassed, but the mission was not complete as an additional $12,000 was needed. The additional funds would ensure the continuation of the Research Division at Perrysburg Hospital. Therefore, those who had yet to send in their Christmas seal returns were urged to do so, as their contributions would advance medical science, provide relief to those suffering, and extend the spirit of the holiday season. Such contributions were not just focused on clearing a pending duty, but were seen as serving the common good.
