1 Officials Press Exxon to Build Shore Oil Plant BY JOAN SWEENEY Timts Staff Writer SANTA BARBARA State and local local officials Thursday tried to woo Exxon Oil Co. into building a shore plant to process the oil and gas from its offshore drilling platform but the company said it will go ahead with plans for an offshore processing plant. The controversy centers around Exxon's huge drilling platform, called Hondo, in the Santa Barbara Channel. Exxon wanted to process the oil ashore but when the state Coastline Commission imposed conditions that Exxon felt were too costly and stringent, stringent, the company decided instead to use a floating offshore processing plant in federal waters. Local officials pressed their point at a special meeting called by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors of federal, county and industry representatives representatives to discuss consolidating onshore facilities and transporting oil via land pipeline instead of tankers. Oil production in the channel was projected by state officials to increase from an estimated 40.000 barrels a day this year to as much as 200,000 barrels a day by the mid 1980s. Much of the meeting focused on the pipeline alternative to tankers. State and county officials were unanimous in support of a pipeline financed by channel oil producers, with possible government financial assistance. Please Torn to Page 24, Col. 1
