Cronkite, the TV newsman, was his pilot. Am I correct? J. A., Rochester. . Not to Walter's knowledge. One of the UPSTATE staffers recently was in New York, and posed the question to Cronkite personally. He does have a pilot's license and has done some flying, but never for the Gannett papers or Frank Gannett. Cronkite suggests that perhaps you are thinking of John Cronkite, a World War I flying ace. But he never piloted for Gannett either. Nor did David Brinkley or Chet Huntley. Q . Can you tell me how old the merry-go-round is at Charlotte? Is it the same one that ran during the gay days of Charlotte? From what my husband remembers about it, it must be close to 30 years old. I think it is just beautiful. G.A., Greece We can't seen to find an exact age on the merry-go-round at Ontario Beach Park, but we can give you an estimate. Lloyd J. 0' Loughlin, the operator of the merry-go-round for 47 years, died in April 1968. And he was an employe of the previous owner for a number of years before that which would make the carousel over 50 years old. The wooden horses were imported from Germany somewhere near the turn of the century. The merry-go-round was not working last summer, but was purchased by the owners of the Char Pit restaurant on Lake Avenue who have it in operation again. Cj) . A while back, when sex education in the schools was a very controversial topic, Dr. Mary S. Calderone was mentioned quite a bit. She's one of the founders and current Executive Secretary of the Sex Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS). It's an organization which furnishes consultants on request to schools and religious and medical groups that are forming sex education programs. My question: Did she get her medical degree from Columbia U. or the University of Rochester? A . U. of R., 1939. She got her Masters of Public Health degree at Columbia. Do you have a guestion about an Upstate personality? Write to UPSTATE Magazine, 55 Exchange St., Rochester, N.Y. 14614. Letters can be answered only in this column. Q
