n d a n e Today's Anniversary 1849 -- John Wilson Danenhower, Danenhower, arctic explorer, was in Chicago. He graduated the Naval Academy in 1870, and immediately accompanied a surveying expedition to North Pacific. In 1873 he assisted in subduing a rebellion in Honolulu. Danenhower joined the Jeannette on its expedition in 1878. The expedition passed through the Bering Straits and sailed northward northward in the Arctic Ocean until the vessels were crushed by ice and the crew was forced to abandon the ship. For 95 days they dragged small boats across the ice before coming to open water. storm separated them, and the boats except the one carrying Danenhowe were lost. June, 1882, he and his surviving crewmen arrived in America. The events of this disastrous disastrous expedition were reported reported by Danenhower in Narrative of the Jeannette." He died in Annapolis, Md., March 20, 1887.
