THE HOMESTEAD LAW , from the beginning of its law-making law-making career, has been an originator of governmental governmental policies. The Republic of Texas inaugurated laws that were peculirly Texan. Some of these policies of government in the course of time passed on into State laws— into Texas State laws when it became a State of the American Union, to dther States of the Union, and to other nations of the world. An outstanding example of this is the Homestead Law. Historians are agreed that the Texas Homestead Law was the first ever passed in any country. It became a law of Texas when Mirabeau B. Lamar was president president of the Republic of Texas. Imprisonment for debt was still in vogue in European countries countries up to the time Texans won their freedom freedom from Mexico, even so enlightened a nation nation as Great Britain being one of the countries countries still holding onto such a relic of tyrrany. Although the United States had practiced a more humane policy, even in the States the lot of the poor man who became involved in debt, was a hard one. Families which had lost all their possessions under the hammer or were facing hard conditions, came to Texas Texas for a new start. Texas became a "Land of Beginning Again." Mirabeau Lamar, a former former Georgian, whose brilliant achievents in both civil and military life, had elevated him to the Presidency of Texas, was a leader in more than one field of endeavor for Texas. He is credited with being the "Father of Education" Education" in Texas and also through his recommendation recommendation the homestead law became a policy policy of Texas which was later to adopted by most other States.
