AT. A "FLA 7VT MONTGOMERY. The Clumsy Execution of a Brmtal Mur- Mur- derer. Motgomebt, Ala., Jan. 24. Special. Green Braxton, a negro who murdered Mr. Lewis Pugh. an aged and respected white farmer of this county in May, 1S39, was hanged here to-day. to-day. to-day. The drop fell at 13 o'clock and the body was cut down twenty minutes later, death having been caused by strangulation. The execution was a botch.' The gallows is built of iron constructed as part and parcel of the jail building. Charles E. Parks, deputy sheriff, went on the gallows with tbe doomed man to adjust the noose and put on the black cap. W. D. Westcott, the sheriff, went in a cell near by to cut the rope that held the triggar to the trap door. Before Parks could adjust the cap and while he was still stauding on the trap some one of the spectators dropped a hand kerchief which the sheriff mistook for a signal and cut tbe rope. The trap fell and Parks and the negro went down together with a crash. Parks fell on the iron floor below and was painfully but not seriously hurt. The negro was then allowed to hang until death ensued from strangulation. The murder of Mr. Lewis Pucn, for which Braxton was made to suffer the severest penalty of the law, was a brutal crime, coldblooded coldblooded and shocking in the extreme. Pugh was 75 years of age. a well-to-do well-to-do well-to-do well-to-do well-to-do farmer, be loved and respected by all who knew him. He lived on his farm in the southern part of Montgomery county aud was murdered for his money. Green Braxton and two otaer negroes went to his house one night in May; 1889, broke through a window and shot the old man down by his bedside. Tbe only person in tbe house with Pugh at the time was his little grandson, aged 13 years, who waa also shot and wounded by the robbers. They carried carried on the old man's trunk and rifled it of several thousand dollars. The boy got well and was the main witness in the trial. Braxton Braxton was captured, but his accomplices escaped. escaped. '
