Old Ring Goes to Church - 1960
Bluford Dog "Old Ring" Is Devout Church Goer "Old Ring", a handsome collie dog belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Vem Whalen of Bluford is a dog, of unusual habits. He is a devoiit church goer. The custom started three years ago when, every time he saw former Superintendent Elmer Outland going to the Evangelical United Brethren church, he v .-c"ld join him. After a time of regular Sunday attendance, he also started going to the weekly prayer meetings. Now, no matter what the occasion, when he hears the church b^l ring he immediately heads in ifi&t direction. With determination more firm than that possessed by many people. Old Ring has absolutely no regard for severe or inclement weather. Last March when the b'i».zard kept many members close to the fireside, he was, as usual, attending the services and occupying his rather chilly "pew" — on the church steps. So, reflecting on the old adage regardhig people "going to the dogs," it would seem Old Ring has given the phrase a reverse meaning. Perhaps more than one person wo*ild be taking a step in the right direction if they did just that.
