' Out of Arizona's colorful and sometimes turbulent .jiast, The Battle of Picachd -- as the only oen fought in during the Civil War--deserves its place among the "Landmark" series. To v commemorate -this encounter of April 15, 1862, between Union soldiers and a group of Confederates under the leadership of Captain Sherod Hunter, a monument was erected at the base of Picacho Peak, approximately 50 miles northwest v of Tucson, just off Highway 84. , Prom a standpoint of size, · this . could more aptly be described as a skirmish, since the number of men involved ·was not great and the losses small: Union soldiers killed -- three; wounded-- two, and three taken prisoners; Confederates -- one man killed,' -and thiee taken prisoner. (History books -call it a UnioU: victory). . As a living memorial to this "battle", and because of interest in Captain Hunter, a group of enterprising at the University of Arizona, in 1939, formed what is known as The Captain Hunter Memorial 'Society. Spearheaded by Lewis D. W. Hall of Tucson, and including grandson of a member of the ..original Confederate troops, this group has unearthed many historical facts of that era " that might not otherwise have come to light.
