The good and loyal Republicans were promptly notified of the mysterious writing on the wall long before daylight, and very speedily raised squads who went about with scrub brushes and water and worked desperately for their life - to rub out the d d accursed figures, the "$329," yet as fast as the "scrub broom brigade" passed over the ground at their work of erasure of the "$329" the same evis - accursing spots were quickly rewritten by some mysterious agency like that that made the terrible writing on the wall in old Scriptural time that carried such consternation into the hearts of the profligate administration of that day.
