Graves' father recovers following recent surgery TOPEKA — William H. "Bill" • Graves this week missed his first state convention of the Kansas Motor Carriers Association in 52 years. Graves, father of Gov. Bill Graves, whose full name is William Preston Graves, is recovering from recent gall bladder surgery. "Dad missed the convention for the first time since 1946," the governor said in remarks to the KM- CA's luncheon Wednesday at the Kansas ExpoCentre. "Some health concerns have caused him not to be here, but he's doing well," the younger Graves said. The elder Graves, 85, co-founded a trucking company with his brother in Salina in the 1930s. That company became Graves Truck Lines, which was Kansas' biggest trucking firm when the family sold it in 1979.
