Michael vs. Walsh ? Bobcats, Grizzlies Square Off Saturday 2010, be at or a n d BOZEMAN - Montana's game of the year will draw 10,000 sports fans to Bozeman tomorrow for the YOth cotiirontation of the University of Montana and Montana State University. And about 9,000 of them will get to see the game. The latter figure is the capacity of Gatton Field, the stadium which may be the site of the annual Copper and Blue classic for the last time. Litigants filed into the courtroom yesterday,'! for the opening of a student-originated suit to halt construction of'a health-physical education complex on the site. Tickets for the game have been sold out since the beginning of football season, according to Bobcats sports information director Ken Nicholson. Montana State, coached by first-year mentor Sonny Holland, goes into the game hopeful of reversing two years of embarrassment at the hands of the previously unbeatable Grizzlies. One point in favor of his optimism is a 21-21 tie with Weber State, a team which the Grizzlies defeated only 14-13 a week later. The Silvertips, under veteran coach Jack Swarthout, have experience and depth on their side. At the beginning of the season, the Grizzlies were p i c k e d to repeat their back-to-back championships, but the passing attacks of the University of Idaho and Boise State dropped them in their tracks. While the main Grizzly threat is the running of Big Sky rushing leader Steve Caputo (more than 1,000 yards so far this season), much of the emotional attention will focus on native sons Buddy Walsh and Gary Michaels. Walsh is a freshman fullback from Butte Central, while Michaels is a sophomore running hack from Park City, a Class C school. Quarterbacking the Bobcats will be Larry Eyer of Missoula, a Hellgate product, with Zoonie McLean of Plentywood backing him up. Michael and Jim Bauer are tapped for starting backfield duties, with Jim Emmert of Kalispell backing up Bauer. . : Sarn. McCullum, of,,Kalispell will play flankerback for the Bobcats, who use a Houston Veer attack. The Grizzlies stay on the ground with a Wishbone offense. , " Freshman standout Ron Rosenberg of Whitefish, who was Montana's most promising product last year, will start at a linebacker position for the Grizzlies. Playing outside linebacker will be Terry Pugh of Kalispell, who apparently has fully recovered from a severe beating in an unprovoked attack by two men in Missoula last spring: Bruce Robinson of Kalispell will start at cornerback for the Bobcats, while Tweed Rhodes of Kalispell will do the Bobcat kicking. The Grizzlies, with their 240-pound offensive line and veteran lineup both ways, have the edge going into the game. The Bobcats started the season young and inexperienced and have suffered numerous injuries throughout the year. "You can't apply any of the standard yardsticks to this game," Coach Sonny Holland said at the beginning of the week as the Bobcats licked their wounds after a 52-24 thrashing ·by Boise State. "We'll be up for this game like no other game we've played all year." "We know we have to win this one every year in order to call it a successful season," Coach Jack Swarthout said following his team's 14-13 victory over Weber State.
