Morris West never does it, but there is an enormous amount of social pressure on most people to join in the New Year's Eve ritual and profess, with the pop of the champagne cork, that great changes will take place. "I have accepted that I keep on doing the same things, that I'm not going to change," says West "But," he added with a hint of jealousy, "I really admire' those people who do keep making new year's resolutions. I think they are marvellous."
