1986 - Middleton & Marcum Closing
Hodgenville clothing store is closing after 50 years HODGENVILLE, Ky. (AP) Middleton & Marcum Dry Goods, a LaRue County institution, is going out of business after nearly 50 years in downtown Hodgenville. "I think it's a real loss to Hodgenville," Hodgenville," Martha Charles Otis, a teacher teacher at Hodgenville Elementary, said of the store, which sold everything from fine suits to bib overalls. "It was one of the few local stores where you can buy so many things." Steve Marcum, the manager and majority shareholder in the store, said it hurts to go out of business. "I don't think there's any store around that still carries cotton gingham gingham dresses for women," said Marcum, Marcum, whose father bought the store in 1937. Marcum said the depressed farm economy was the main reason he decided to close the store. "If the farmer doesn't make it, we don't," he said. "They're the ones who butter our bread."
