This original plan, dosigniiled X- 4 in ihc House of The Week series, achieves t w o happy results: ( 1 i The- hrdroom arcu is much Kroater than in almost any olhcr hoiibC wilh co,nparable foundation SJA\ and (2) The alternating levels create a striking ex'erioi appearance. From (lie drawing board of Archi l r c t Rudolph A. Mutern. the simple but unusual design incorporates areas on three different levels. The plan works this way: The lower level is in a reclaimle extending from front lo rear. All this adds up lo a plan nearly squaie in shape, adaptable to a 60 by 100 fool lot. The t n o grade levels were kept narrow and running from front to rear to crcule a fresh look in the exterior design. The upper level from side to side -- because it overlaps only the front half of the Jlrnl bedroom overhong/ above' THE FLOOR PLAN at the left shows the rectangular living level extending from front to rear. The plan at the right shows the rectangular bedroom level extending lower level -- extends as an independent, elevated wing supported by columns. " f t Ihis were a regular split, the bedrooms would be located over the foyer, mudroom and recreation room -- an area of about 560 square feet. No more than three normal size bedrooms would be possible in such an area. "Here we have 1,050 square feet of bedroom area, divided into four bedrooms plus one and a half baths and closet space -- an increase of more than 490 square feet in bedroom space." THIS STYLISH HOUSE represents a new concept in multi - level design. The upper bedroom wing, shown here, extends from side to side. The lower living level runs from front to rear. PARTICULARLY INTERESTING is this view of the entrance foyer. It looks f r o m the recreation room out into the porch and garden terrace at the left and up into the living room at the right. 4 3 - 6 ' from side to side. The bedroom level overlaps the level only at the front of the house. of the carport and front entrance. The whole area lies under the extended bedroom level, giving weather protection. Polished Slnle Foynr Floor UP FOUR STEPS from the foyer is the garden terrace, shielded on the left by a stone wall and opening into the living room through sliding glass doors. The entrance to the house is through large double doors. The foyer floor is polished slate. The recreation room is on the same level as the foyer hut it can be closed off completely by folding partitions. The living room is up 4 steps from the foyer. Wben the recreation room is used for entertaining, the folding partitions may be thrown open to usher guests in; the foyer than can he used as an overflow area. Guesls, loo, can wander readily to the garden terrace in the rear or to the living room. Two glass side lights flank the double entrance door to capture more natural light for Ihc foyer. The recreation room has a tile floor on concrete to reduce cleaning chores. A lavatory is convenient to recreation room, outdoors, the basement and the kitchen. The living level has a chimney core acts as a divider between the living room and the kitchen and pro\ i d e s a corner fireplace barbecue.
