THE LONDON Bridge Regatta has grown into the largest inland sailing event in the western part of the nation. In fact, it became so big that it difficult for officials to the various classes of catamarans in the two-day period. That is the reason for the split. Two National champions are among the skippers who will be contending for the overall fleet championship S a t u and Sunday. They are Vessel, Del Mar, who skippers a Pacific Cat, Harry Pattison, Newport Beach, in the Prindle-16 Class. Ken K a r n e s , Bay, will be crewing for Vessel. Pattison's w i f Sue, will be crewing for him. The two skippers, who won their titles elsewhere, will find the unpredictable desert winds a real challenge. SPECTATORS and fellow sailors at Lake Havasu City will have opportunity of seeing the famed "Sailing Minneys" of Newport Beach in action aboard Pacific Cats. Three Minney brothers, Ernie, 36, Joe, 33, Owen, 32, along with sister, Cindy Curran, 28, products of Papa George Minney, will be leaving salt w a t e r and Havasu for the first George Minney practically reared his brood the cockpit of one sailing craft or another. Ernie, Joe and Owen will be pering their own P-Cats; Cindy will be riding the trapeze for brother Joe. THE MINNEYS have been referred to as "schooner nuts" primarily because they spent their formative years aboard papa's 65-foot Kelpie, a legend among the windjammer crowd. George started making sailors out of his children when he bought the old Tahiti ketch, Adios.in One year later, he bought the Kelpie. Then in 1959, he loaded the entire family into the Kelpie and off for Tahiti and other islands in the South Pacific. From that time on young Minneys were hooked.
