Notebook OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)-Gene McGill says he won't run for public public office in Oklahoma. The Woods County cattle rancher rancher concedes though he's probably better known than any previous state chairman of the Democratic party. Saturday McGill is to be reelected reelected chairman, climaxing his successful skirmish against the J. Howard Edmondson administration. administration. McGill wooed Democrats throughout the state in his anti- administration bid for a full two- year vterm. And it paid off. His victory actually came in February when almost all of the county committees pledged him their support. McGill has held party officers from the precinct to the state level. And during the past few months he has become one of the most written-about Democrats in .Oklahoma. But he apparently won't try to " cash in on this publicity by seeking seeking public office. "My goal was to serve the people people in this particular office," he said. When his present term expires, McGill said he plans to return • fulltime to farming and cattle raising. His major tasks this year will be assisting Democratic candi- . Sates for office and arranging for Oklahoma's 'participation in the Democratic national convent i o n July 11 at Los Angeles. McGill is almost certain to lead the Oklahoma delegation because of his victory over Edmondson's candidate—Pat Malloy of Tulsa, if Malloy had been victorious, the governor probably would have called the shots. The party chairman wants an uninstructed delegation and personally personally opposes the unit rule. This means that for the first in years Oklahoma Democrats may split their vote for presidential candidates. candidates. McGill believes he is different than most of his predecessors in that he is being put into office by the people instead of the governor. governor. "I'm going to do what the Democrats Democrats want instead of what one man wants," he said. McGill is a pilot, and he plans to continue flying his plane aboul the state conferring with loca Democrats and tending to party affairs. He is 45, slender and slow-talk ing. He wears his gray hair crop ped as closely as any of the ad ministration crew-cuts. But his political philosophy is considerably considerably different.
