NW legends play blues showcase - NW legends play blues showcase Small Tomorrow...
NW legends play blues showcase Small Tomorrow night, a who's who of the Northwest blues scene will take the stage during the Blues Showcase at the Halfpenny Bar & Grill. The event, which is being organized by local blues artists Boyd Small and Gary Burford, features a lineup of noted blues musicians, including Terry Robb, Carlton Jackson, David Kahl, Jake Blair and Melody Guy. "We are doing a Northwest local heroes show, as we like to call it," Burford said. "It is pretty much Northwest legends." "We have been playing together in different lineups for years and years, except for the time I was gone," Small said. "So there is a lot of material between us." "We are going to be playing with two drum sets; two master drummers playing side by side and singing at the same time," Small said. "We have done this before with great success, but it was almost 20 years ago." Small established himself as a musician in Oregon before moving to the Netherlands about 16 years ago, where he played, wrote and produced music. He is the co-founder of the Holland-based record label Jackson BLUES SHOWCASE When: 9 p.m. Friday Where: Half Penny Bar & Grill, 3743 Commercial St. SE Cost: Free Information: (503) 540-5899 Cool Buzz and a Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award Hall of Fame drummer. The Statesman Journal named Burford Musician of The Year three times. He also has received accolades from the Cascade Blues Association. Portland guitarist Robb has been playing with the greats for years and even has an award named after him by the Cascade Blues Association. Jackson was inducted to the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Portland musician Kahl won an award for bass in the 2013 Cascade Blues Association Muddy Awards. "Jake Blair. He is the young, hot-shot guitar player," Small said. "He is not what you would call a legend yet, but a future legend." "He is fabulous," Burford said. "I used to teach him guitar when he was 15." Rounding out the lineup, Guy is a singer and guitarist who will be marrying her fiance Jake Blair next month. "It is a little bit of a passing of the torch," Burford said, "though none of us are done yet." Carlee Wright
