In Jackson county, near this city, Adam Wirt, bet ween 60 and 70 y ears old, has been living with his son, William Wirt, but not in the most happy manner. Yesterday the old man attacked his daughter-in-iaw with a corn knife and cut her in a terrible manner, though she managed to escape from him and make her way to v here her husband w as, nearly a mile a wav. The old man attempted to murder his two little grand daughters, aged 2 and vt.ari but thev eluded hi tn"e bushes. Wirt then sei house, in v. hich were two m and hid in t lire to t le more of his ! cranJchildren. aged week and ; rears. and the house and contents, including the two children, were burned. Wirt proceeded to the haymow and hung himself. When Mr. William Wirt reached her husband and apprised him of what had occurred he carried the bleeding woman to a house in the neighborhood and hurried to his home, only to rind a pile of ruins. The two eldest children were found in the brush, who had been attracted by the fire. The old man is be-liev ed to hav e been inane. It is understood that old man Wirt has a wife living, from whom he has been divorced.
