„ Doitt t» Growing Croitt By Deer Is Slight San Antonio; A preliminary in* /estimation committee, riamed Monday by Bexar County Judge Chae, W. Anderson to study the claims of farmers in the vicinity of Wetmore that their crops .are being damaged by deer, reported that in ess than 1 -per cent of the crop a survey of the area, they found damage due to deer. The committee reported that depredations to corn were apparently due to rabbits and other pests rather than deer. The members of the committee pointed out that the corn, because of the drouth, had >ecome useless as ear corn and that if any damage were done by deer, it would be "less than 1 per ent." The committee consisted of Joe Olivari, assistant county probation officer; Arnold Sheldon, county highway patrolman; County Commissioner Sam Anderson, and Game Warden Arthur S. Hitzfelder. Findings of the committee will 3e forwarded to the Texas Game, Pish and Oyster Commission at Austin, it was said. Meanwhile, Warden Hitzfelder Monday denied that he had made threats to farmers on the question of protecting crops from damage by the deer. He explained that he had merely promised to enforce the game laws and that if there were any violations, he would arrest the offenders. The farmers have asserted that even though they fail to obtain mission to kill deer damaging their permits from the State Game Corn- crops, they intend to act to protect their fields. They claim they have a legal right to defend and protect their crops. <•«>•$•
