Deer Trip Big Success, Except for Frozen Beer Five Northwest S i d e residents were among a group of hunters who bagged six deer on a hunting expedition in Pope county in Southern Illinois. Local h u n t s m e n included Donald and John Wiedemann, Wiedemann Insurance Realty Co., 4108 Armitage; R o b e r t Holzer, 1708 N. Harding; Joseph Zittmann, 2941 N. Menard and Father Robert Multhauf, of St Philomena church. Both Holzer and D o n a l d Wiedemann dropped d e e r on shots of about 50 yards. \ The six deer dressed out to over 600 pounds and all nine hunters went home with a bunk of venison. Donald Wiedemann said the group hunted in a national forest near Harrisburg, just across the Illinois state line f r o m Kentucky. "The area is only about 15 miles from Harrisburg." said Wiedemann, "but it takes an hour to get there because there are no real roads." * * V The group has a four-wheel- drive station wagon, equipped for hunting trips, which they use to travel over the dirt roads and trails. The men took along two tents, one to serve as a kitchen, and one in which they slept in sleeping bags placed upon cots. Wiedemann, who %vas the unofficial cook for the group, said the hunters spent three days out in the woods with nary a casualty or a complaint. The b i g r g e s t deer, a 153 COMMUNITY PUBLICATIONS Page 22G--Dec. 16, 1964 pound buck, almost got away, Wiedemann reported. The deer was dropped by Wymond Thurmond, Glen Ellyn. But after everyone thought it was dead, the deer get up and started to amble away. I Thurmond pursued the deer I into the forest, shot it again, but the animal still kept ambling and it t o o k Thurmond about two hours to finish the job. * * * During the chase, Thurmond ran out of ammunition and he had to borrow a shot from a hunter he met to place his third shot which dropped the buck for good. Wiedemann said the temperature dropped to 10 degrees one night causing the one big mishap of the trip -- the two cases of beer the men brought with them froze solid.
