All of the locations taken by the early French on this side ot the river, jls or 20 in number, show an entry date earlier than 1800. The of a Catholic priest who looked after the little flock here in 1800 describes tne place as it was at that time. He describes It as then being a hamlet of twenty to t h i r t y houses, ferrying the river and of two stores located on what is now the bluffs of the river bank. I
