A New Jewish Republic By FREDERIC J. RASKIN WASHINGTON, D. C,, June 22— Not since the Emperor Titus took! Jerusalem in the year of our Lord (but not theirs) 70, have the Jews had an independent nation, wholly under their own governance, until the erection and recognition of Biro- Bidzhan in far off Siberia. This province has been proclaimed an autonomous nation, sovereign in itself although one of the constituent divisions of the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. Each of these divisions is somewhat like a state of the United States; that is, independent in itself, but a part of the general federation. It is true that, since the World war Jerusalem has enjoyed a sort of nationalistic resurrection, but it is fai- from being an exclusively Jewish community and, after all, is ruled by Great Britain under the special mandate accorded by the Treaty of Versailles. For more than 1900 years, the fall of Jerusalem has been the object of a storm of Jewish wailing which has been heard around the world. The fall of the ancient Holy City of the Jews has shared, as an example of wholesale disaster to the Jewish people, the forty years of wandering in the wilderness.
