Old burial plot of county family rediscovered at Green Spring By ORA ANN ERNST ' A "mini-safari" near Ihe site'of Ihe oln Green Spring Furnace has resulted in the re- discovery discovery of Ihe Lancelot Jacques family cemetery, a burial plot that Jacques def ceridants:-.thouglii was obliterated by construction construction of Interstate Itoule 70. None of Ihe 150-year-old grave maikeis . are in good condition, and all are illegible or nearly so. ' The "Green Spring Cemetery"- is so marked on a 1962 survey map published by Ihe Washington County Soil Conservation Service. Service. Andrew "Jack" .Michael, present oivner of the farm that conlains the.Jacques plot, recalls that v tV.e grave markers were more reailable when he purchased the property in 1959. -.. . The late George Lancelot Brewer, a ·J.lcqucs descendant wlto lived ai Cedar Lawn, had researched the family tree headed by Lancelot Jacques.a French Huguenot u ho settled at Green Spring and developed a thriving iron ind-jslrj; there in 1768. Although tlw first Lancelot Jacques in Ihis area was a bachelor, he had a nephew who bore his name, and each succeeding .' generation lists a Lancelot Jacques, One, n grandfather of George Brewei. .married Julia Ann Gehr and operated a store and post office at Indian Springs during Civil \V;ir times.
