Oram E. Ashby Mt. Vernon Funeral services for Oram E. Ashby, 53, of 1706 S. 14th St., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the South Side Baptist church, with the Rev. Glenn Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Laird cemetery. Friends may call at the Hughey-Pulley Funeral Home after 5 p.m. Wednesday and until 11 a.m. Thursday, when the body will be moved to the church to lie in state from noon until the funeral hour. Mr. Ashby died at 5:55 a.m. Monday at Good. Samaritan Hospital. He was employed for 24 years by the shoe factory and was later employed by of the city schools board of education. Mr, Ashby was born in Belle Rive on Oct. 21, 1921, the son of John Robert and Nora Mae (White) Ashby. On March 29, 1947, he was married to Romona W. Taylor in Mt. Vernon. She survives. Mr. Ashby served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a charter member and deacon of the South Side Baptist church. He was a trustee of the Laird Cemetery Association. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Nora Ashby of. Mt. Vernon; three sons, Gary Ashby, stationed with the army at Ft. McClellan, Ala., Johnny Asby of Mt. Vernon, and Jeffrey Ashby, at home; a daughter. Miss Monda Ashby, at home; a brother, Bobby Ashby of Mt. Vernon; three sisters, Mrs. Flossie Phelps of Lakeland, Fla., Mrs. Delia Novak of Ashley, Mrs. Wanda White of Athens, Ga.; three grandchildren ; and several nieces and nephews.
