State or Missouri, J ss fmrntv of SL Louis. 1 ' On tha twentv - aeventh dav of August. A. D. 1858. before the undersigned, Commissioner of Deeds for Tennessee, in Missouri, as aforesaid, personally came Sylvester H. Laflin, Vice President, William C. Buchanan, Buchanan, Secretory, and Chas. Tillman, Director of the Western River Improvement and Wrecking Compa - who heins dulv sworn, deoose and state upon oath : That they were severally present when the money recovered from the wreca ei tne steamer renn - sylvania waa received by said Company from its agent and employee, George an Honten. That said money was in gold and silver ; the silver being secured In a box with iron bands, and the gold in a canvas sack sealed. That they examined the coin, and found part of the silver melted, and the gold blackened and defaced defaced moie or less by the heat. That they assorted and were present when said money wss counted, and found the amount to he aa stated in the - exhibit marked " B," which is hereto attached and made a part of this affidavit. Affiants further state that they were informed by said George Van Houten, that Capt. Nims had given to Capt. rkiineieiter, master 01 steeuner Pennsylvania, whilst at the wreck of said boat, the am )f sixty dollars, to use In payment of men employed employed to watea the wreck before the arrival of the Submarine Bell Boat No. 12. They also state that after the money waa counted, thirty per cent, of the said amount was deducted by their said company for salvage, and the remainder, $3,665 66, (which was inclusive of the $60 given to Capt. Klinefelter at the wreck,) was paid over to said Klinefelter, and his and Lockwood A Pearson's receipts receipts taken therefor. And also, that George Houten and Samuel C. Nims, by whom said money was recovered recovered from the wreck of the steamer Pennsylvania, were employees of said Wrecking Company, and were acting under the instructions of its President and Superintendent, Superintendent, in the recovery and subsequent disposal of the same. A correct copy of the receipts given by Capt, Klinefelter and Lockwood & Pearson tor him. for said money, are heretofore attached, and marked Exhibit "C." , , 8. H. Laflin, Vice President. Wm. C.
