a THE MARIN LOG Brisk Winds Provide Thrills In Bay Race — 12 2 . .(Results — — 2— vs or — — 4 4 4 4 11 By BETTY FROST Brisk breezes lent plenty of excitement to the first one- design’regatta ever held on San Francisco Bay last weekend. Seventeen one-design classes had 117 boats on the St. Francis Y.C. starting line in spite of the posted small craft warnings. Only concession to the day was that some of the skippers decided not to set spinnakers for the homeward run from Crissy Buoy to the St. Francis marker at the end of the 14- mile race. Gipsy, Bob Vidmar’s International class sloop, scheduled to be the challenger for Corinthian Y.C. in an attempt to take the San Francisco Bay Challenge Trophy away from Sausalito Y.C. on July 20, suffered a broken boom in the rough going. The prospective defender, Norena, sailed by her owner, W. G. Gilson, suffered a torn mainsail in the fray. This left Paul De Silva’s Icy Folly in the top spot in the IC clash. Corinthian Commodore Norman Louvau provided thrills for the spectators by acting out Doug Johnson’s Aloha at the finish. The commodore’s Windfall took the Junior Clipper race with a seven-second lead.
