22 Jun 1964 Daily Ind Jnl "Vamonos Suprirse Regatta Winner"
Vámonos Surprise Regatta Winner The upset of the day in yesterday’s Encinal Yacht Club’s regatta occurred in Cruising Club “B” division with Bill Stewart’s Vamonos of St. Francis Y. C. romping home the winner by a near nine-minute margin, corrected time, over second placer Amorita, Henry Grandin’s San Francisco Y.C.’s entry. It was Vamonos’ first win in bay races and was accomplished by some astute sailing by Stewart. On the second thrash to windward out to Crissey Buoy, he chose to beat up the city front whereas the other boats to the fore headed for Angel Island, and that was an unwise choice. In Cruising Club “A,” Santana again had company in a surprise starter, Jim Wilhite’s Athene. It was a good tight race with Athene moving out into an early lead. Yet, once in the groove, Santana hung tough and finished but three minutes behind her larger rival on elapsed time. On corrected time, it was Santana by nearly four minutes. Hank Easom was forced to scratch his eight-meter Yucca from the race due to a recurrence of his back problems. It was a near perfect day for the regatta, good winds and smooth seas; quite the opposite of conditions faced by the class boats on Saturday. That was a day of 25 knot winds and heavy seas and casualties were heavy as at least five boats were dismasted. Bill Trask of the host club piloted his Farallone Clipper sloop Hoyden II to an easy victory over 10 opponents in Class C with Javelin second place. Numse copped Class D honors while That’s Why took the runner- up spot. In Performance Handicap events, here are the winners: Division 9-1. Ripple; Division HkJ, Jonmar; Division 11-K, Genii: Division 14-L, Atlanta; Division 15-M, Baum’s Away.
