Where ore they now? Brandt quit while ahead By PAUL ZUKOWSKI Freeman Staff I F EVER THERE WAS a good examtple of quitting while you’re ahead, Mervin Brandt is it. In I960, Brandt resigned from the Waukesha County Board, quit as village president of Pewaukee and shed numerous numerous other official seats and chairmanships. He said this week that he bought a 26-unit motel in downtown Racine on New Year’s Day of 1969, and has run it since then. Brandt, 58, said he keeps up with events back in Waukesha County "only by what I read in the papers.” He kept any opinions to himself cn how things are being managed here since his departure, say- Mervin Brandt ing, ‘‘I don't believe in trying to judge from remote control.” control.” He said that since he was bom and raised in Pewaukee. he still has relatives in the village and drives up to visit them at times. He has no business connection's in the county anymore I k ? said. He used to operate Brandt Dairy Co. He gave no reason, other than buying the motel business, business, for choosing to leave when he did. ‘‘I had only a couple of months to go as village president, anyway,” he said. It was his 12th year of service. Brandt also had spent 10 years on the County Board, long enough to become chair man of the Park and Plan Commission. He had a year to go on his board term when he left. When asked if he had jany advice on Pewaukee’s problem problem in hiring a new police thief, he laughed, ‘Leave me out of that one. They can figure figure that one out themselves.”
