Andy Falls, high school football 2, nov 1972 - Rams Bear Down In Crucial Drills Tuesday's two...
Rams Bear Down In Crucial Drills Tuesday's two work sessions were better than those on Monday," Claude Fest. head coach at Del Rio S 5 .School, declared Wednesday morning. His statement, made with much more hidden content than probably Intended for the press, tended to clear up a rather lethargic situation which developed after the Rams lost a disappointing 7-6 contest to District 32-AAAA leader Kennedy two weeks agp and had an idle Friday last week Monday's practice left a lot to be desired according to the head coach and he wasted no time in spending a few words aaying so. By the same token he was ready to say this morning that Tuesday's work sessions showed more of the old zip" which was a Ram trade mark over its first three district games preparations. However, if all the coaching staff had to fret over was the one-day of lackadaisical Practice session on Monday Tuesday's peppy prep session would have erased the frowns. But such Isn't the case. What concerns the head man and his staff is the injury plague which has thinned the ranks of the regulars to where the shock broops must fortify the front lines for Friday's Homecoming game here with the Fox Tech Buffaloes. Best who is out with a broken collar bone. This is the first time in seven games we won't have him in the starting lineup. Then there's Humberto Barren whom we lost in the Kerrvitle game with a broken leg. Besides we have several problems in Jerry Fay with a ligament problem that could keep him out. To add to the ailing list there's Victor Luna with a knee Injury and Richard Salazar with an ankle ailment. To top it off Tim Caldwell can play only on offense because we don't want to expose him to extra heaw defensive contact because of his recent law fracture." Fest, who unloaded his woes to one long breath didn't act as ne were trying to establish a pre-game alibi and he quickly important game rests upon the shoulders of a half dozen squadmen. Some have partial game time with promising performances either on offense or defense but mostly the time was logged to spell a starter Friday we'll be definitely without the services of Leon , r defensive and offensive units. The players who see action against Fox Tech are good boys. They have ability and talent and for the most part are experienced. Some who will Play a major part of the Fox lech game would have been more, experienced had not our three district games been so dam tight. "You remember we edged Lanler by one touchdown and had a 7-0 lead over Memorial until we broke it open with just minutes left to play 21-0 Then in Kennedy game it was 7-6 against us so we didn't have the opportunity to use a whole lot of alternates." In fact, Fest felt that "both Gary Rodriguez and Gus Ramirez' would run well" Friday and had a vote of pre-contest confidence for Jeff Burr, Andy Falls and Bobby Garcia as alternates and Bemie Herrera as a two-way operative if Luna can't play at all. The situation at the Ram camp was still strong defensively with Stephen Quinones, Rusty Chalk, Mike Scott, Keith Stone and Bemie Herrera joining Felix Garcia on the healthy side. The only questionable cog is the defensive slot vacated by Best but Andy Falls, Jeff Burr or Mike Sadler should be able to handle it, Fest indicated today. Realistically speaking, the Rams have never been a drive-in ball club. Mosi of Del Rio's scoring has come on the long route runs set up by fine down field blocking and speedy alternates Rodriguez, Burr and Garcia could equal the TJD routes with the same type of interference in Friday night's Homecoming Game. Besides, contends Coach Fest, "There's an outside chance that our passing game could click. Mario Hernandez had three which could have been caught with a little more alert performances by his receivers against Kennedy and Felix Garcia has looked good the last two workouts. We'll run at Fox Tech and throw when we think it is necessary and hope to score both ways while our defense hopefully shuts them out." Scoreboard NBA Virginia at Indiana San Diego at Memphis
