Battalion Ends First Phase Of Desert Training (Special to The Mercury) T. FORT RILEY — The 1st Bat- .talion, 63rd Armor of Fort Riley has completed phase I of its tJunnery and Tactical Training at Fort Irwin, Calif. The first three weeks in the Mojave High Desert saw the battalion firing Tank Gunnery Tables 1 through VII, culminating in the Tank Crew Profi- iciency Course, Table VIII. This •course was fired twice by each i>f 60 tank crews, once in daylight and once at night using artificial illumination provided .by searchlight tanks and 107mm mortar illuminating ammuni- lion. Forty-three of sixty crews successfully completed the course. " High crew for the course is led by P-Sgt. Makuisa Peapeal- alo, 1st Platoon of Company A, •with a total score of 2125 out of a possible 2400 points. Second honors went to the crew of S-Sgt. Grover Mullenix, 3rd Platoon Company A with an aggregate score of 2020 points. With tank gunnery behind it, the battalion now sets its sights on Company and Battalion level Field Training Exercises and Army Training Tests which comprise Phase II of their desert training. During the remainder of September the three line companies will receive their annual training tests and then in October, the 1st Brigade, commanded by Col. Stanley F. Parr, will administer the annual test to the entire battalion. Phase III, closing out and return to Fort Riley, will commence on or about October 18 with the main body returning on October 20. an
