Vt. fifty-nine fifty-nine fifty-nine years ago. Tha aon of a poor farmer, ho fitted himself for college by " day's worka " for the neighboring farmers, and, entering the University of Vermont Vermont ho supported himaelf through college by teaching. After graduation he studied law, and soon after hla admission took a leaalag place among the - lawyer of Washington, Orange, Caledonia and Lamoille Counties, in whose eonrte he practiced. He waa a member of the State Senate from 1860 to ls72. and lte President the last two years of his service. He waa also a member of the State Board of Agriculture Agriculture and Prealdent of the Vermont Bar Association. Association. A stauneh advocate of the development development of man of acturing Industrie in Vermont, he took an active part In the construction of the Montpeller and Wells River Railroad, and In the building op of the granite worka which that railroad made possible.
