"Winterfest "66," a 10-day carnival of culture, will open Feb. 18 with something for everybody -- from karate wrestling to Leonard Bernstein. The three - ring Big Top of culture will include performing arts, lectures and exhibitions. It will be staged primarily in Boston's new War Memorial Auditorium. Crowds up to one-half million are expected to attend the many - faceted festival. Admission will run from $1 to ?3 for major evening performances, and 50 cents to $2 for afternoon activities. Children will be admitted free. All demonstrations, lectures and exhibitions will be free". "' '"" ' Boston Mayor JohtuF. Collins has called "Winterfest '6r ' a "cultural catalyst", an ambitious project which may take its place among the great art festivals in the world. Children's interests wlllbees- pecially featured. Held during the mid-winter school vacation, children will be able to attend such activities as puppet shows, a ballet dress rehearsal, children's theatre, or demonstrations by Olympic skiers and gliding experts. A number of business firms have contributed support to "Winterfest '66" by commission- Ing artists, like composer Darius Milhaud, and by sponsoring programs and loaning executive assistance to the event. Highlights of the performing arts will be the New York City Ballet; an appearance by Leonard Bernstein with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; a Folk- fest, featuring such greats as Mississippi Muddy Waters, Phil Ochs, Jim Kweshkin and the Jug Band; New Orleans Jazz and music from Bourbon Street's Preservation Hall. Cleveland's integrated Karamu Theatre Group will present a calypso musical. A Film Festival will include Preston Sturges' old 1930*5 comedies, and new West Coast and European films. The New England premiere of Hollywood's "The Chase" will open the festival with a benefit for "Winter- fest." There also will be a Japanese Tea Ceremony, or a movie called "The Crazy Quilt."
