H. P. Hum, Civil War Veteran, Is 93 Years Old Monday, October 10, Henry Phillip Hum, one of Chehalis' few remaining veterans of the Givil war, celebrated his ninety-third birthday anniversary. Mr. Hum, despite his years, enjoys fairly good health and is seen almost daily on the streets of Chehalis in the uptown district where he visits with his old-time Lewis r o u n t y pioneer friends and -others Mr. Hum was born in Floyd county H. P. HURN or 12 days In succession. Returning to Nashville, Tenn., the regiment again dismounted. During January, 1866, the 12 companies were again; mounted. About February 1 they I were ordered to Vicksburg, Miss v I and to New Orleans, La., March March 27 the transfer waa again 1 , made, this time to Mobile, Ala. lowing the capture of two posts regiment went .on a raid from Blakely across the state of Alabama into Georgia and back to the state capital, the trip covering 800 miles. Thence the regiment went to Columbus, Miss., arriving May 25, city being headquarters until November 1, when the Thirteenth ordered to Vicsburg to be mustered out of service. Mr. Hum discharged there November 18, 1865. He returned to Indiana, where he lived nine years. Later he lived in Greenwood county, Kansas, for nine years, following which he . came to Lewis county, where he resided ever since. BAILEY SACK IN JAIL. Emmet Bailey, who is under sentence, on appeal, for murdering wife, and who escaped from the several weeks ago and Ws later recaptured, is back in jail again. has been in a hospital for treatment for taking poison. He is closely confined in the new county jail. Indiana, October 10, 1S34, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hurn. H e ' w a s married J u l y 20, 1S54, to Lydia A. Hendrioks in Harrison county, Indiana. Mrs. Hum's death occurred some years ago, but Mr. Hurn has three living children. Ben H u r n and Mrs. S. M. Alexander of Chehalis flnd Mrs. Mary E. Hartman of Ostrander. Mr. H u r n , aside from being well known as a Civil war veteran, is also in the Lewis c o u n t y pioneer class, having arrived here August 1, 1881. He is a democrat in politics and claims affiliation with the Methodist church. He has been a member of the G. A. R. for many years, having served in various official positions with Joe Hooker Post of Chehalis. During the Civil war Mr. Hurn served with the Thirteenth Indiana Cavalry. This organization was completed April 2S, 1S64, and he served 23 months in a most active way, taking part in a number of stirring campaigns. The day following the organization of the Thirteenth it was ordered to Huntsville, Ala., Where it was dismounted and did garrison duty for six months from June 1 to November 1, when six companies were in the battles and skirmishes at Overall creek December 4 and for 10 ANOTHER SMOKER. Bartel and Smith are arranging for another popular smoker for Chehalis, about October 25 or 26, the exact date to be announced later.
