Police in Kennett, south of St. Louis, located the Bateses and Mrs. Cady at a motel late Tuesday after a tip from a relative of Bates who had heen asked for money. A lengthy confrontation followed, with Bates attempting to persuade his wife to commit suicide with him, authorities said. Mrs. Cady was released about 3 a.m. Wednesday and less than an hour later he shot himself in the head with a .38-caliber revolver.
