Sheriff Joe Heitzinger said today that Maynard Ropella, 18, escaped Portage county prisoner who was captured by police at Minneapolis Tuesday' morning, admitted holding up and robbing Frank Jagodzlnskl at his Seneca Corners (Wood coun ty) tavern and oil station last Sun day night. Ropella, who walked out of the Portage county jail on October while being held on a charge of burglarizing the Wilson meat mar ket at Bancroft September 23, will be returned here today by Under- sheriff John Langbaucr and Deputy Douglas Johnson unless additional difficulties are encountered, accord ing to the sheriff. Heitzinger returned hers from Minneapolis early today with a car stolen at Newton, Kas., October 10, but Ropellas return was delayed day because of a new extradition taw recently adopted by the Minne sota legislature. Was Resting in Car Ropella was taken into custody by Minneapolis police while resting in the stolen car at the outskirts o the city between 8 and 9 o'clock Tuesday morning. Sheriff Heitz inger said he was told by C. E. Mc- Clasky, captain of detectives nf the Minneapolis police department. Po lice made the Investigation sfle being told a "suspicious looking csr" wss parked at the outskirts, Heitzinger reported. The Minneapolis officer said Ro pella had In his possession a ,32-cal Ibre revolver when he was taken into custody. He admitted, accord Ing to Minneapolis police, breaking jail at Stevens Point, burglarizing the Wilson meat market, stealing a car and holding up the Seneca Cor ners tavern operator. He also men tinned "robbing a hardware store, according to an Associated Press dispatch received here today, but Sheriff Heitzinger said he has no knowledge of this particular inci dent. Heitzinger said the revolver carried by Ropella may have been obtained In a hardware store burglary- Was Awaiting Sentence The defendant also told Minneapolis police he ttole a purse from a woman at Eau Claire. The purse contained only 90 cents, he said. Ropella bad pleaded guilty In justice court to the Bancroft burglary and was awaiting smtcnce in circuit court. - v Heitzinger said Ropella was questioned by police at Topeka, Kas., on October 12, while driving a Plymouth sedan which, he said, they have since learned is the one (Continued on page eight)
