The jaunty American flyers were their friends, not just soldiers billeted among them for a brief stay. ' Memorial Financed Sometimes the pilots didn't come back. Then there was sadness, sadness, for many of the Britishers living near the airdrome felt a personal loss. The members of the fighter group planned to erect a fitting memorial to their dead on Martlesham Heath. But the unit was deployed before the plans were effected. Two of the Suffolk residents knew of the proposed memorial, Capt. and Mrs. Eric Hervey of Little Bcalings Grove, who often entertained officers and men of the group at their home, sponsored a public subscription to finance a plaque in tribute to the 356th's hero dead, the sort of memorial the surviving flyers had themselves planned for their buddies. On June 13, in simple and tearful ceremony, the Earl of Stradbroke, Lord Lioutenant of Suffolk County, unveiled the stone and bronze memorial. Among the names on the plaque is that of Lt. Paul J. Roberts Jr., Los Angeles Times employee, who was reported missing on Oct. 7, 1944, after a combat flight over Germany. Hawaii Sugar Strike Begins HONOLULU. Sept. 1.
