at Ridge ave. 2 Baby-Sitters Lead 3 Tots to Safety in Fire Three young children and two teenage baby-sitters escaped injury when a 2 alarm fire destroyed the upper floors of a midcity residence and forced evacuation of 15 persons from 6 nearby homes. The fire started shortly before 8:30 last night in the home of Mrs. Helen Carlson, 31, who occupies the second and third floors of an apartment at 256 S. Van Pelt st. A private parking garage is on the first leveL MRS. CARLSON said she was visiting in midcity and left her son. Jay, 4, and two other children spending the evening at her borne in the care of baby-sitters. They were Abigail Kunatb, 1, and her sister, Victoria, 5, of 2014 Waverly st. The sitters, Ann Arnold and Carol Mclntyre, both 19, and both students in residence at the Franklin School of Arts and Sciences at 21st and Latimer sts., said they were watching TV on the third Boor while the children were asleep. They told Mrs. Carlson they heard a loud noise coming from the second-floor living room and became frightened. When they investigated flames and heavy smoke were pouring from behind a sofa. BOTH GIRLS awakened the children and led them downstairs past the flames to the street. ' Firemen said the blaze spread rapidly through the upper floors, but they had the fire under control within two ' hours. Two adjoining buildings suffered smoke and water damage, they said. Cause of the blaze is under investigation.
