Claims Spanish Sahara Is Being Invaded j ALGIERS, Algeria (UPI) —I Algeria today portrayed the | Moroccan takeover of the Spanish Sahara as a “slow,; murderous” invasion against! spirited fighting by Sahara guerrillas of the Algeria-backed1 Polisario Front. (In Morocco, the official news agency published reports by foreign journalists that the Sahara capital and countryside i were quiet. Moroccan soldiers; were quoted as saying they met with only light pockets of I resistance and only a few* Moroccan soldiers wtre wounded.) The official Algerian news agency published In newspapers today a long report of Sahara guerrilla activity since Spain, i in a Nov. 14 agreement, gave1 Morocco most of the former j Spanish colony with Mauritania1 receiving the southern tip. Calling the agreement an “qvil collusion,” the report said] the Moroccan forces have; occupied only the capital of El Ayun and the town of Smara in ; the Sahara because of guerrilla resistance. “Despite 4,000 troops and material, the progress of the invasion troops towards El Ayun was long and murderous... The date of occupation was postponed and Spanish troops asked to stay ... Between Tarfaya and El Ayun the invasion forces suffered 29 dead including three officers and 186 wounded.” “The dynamism and cfficien- < y of the Sahara fighters totally upset the plans of invasion. ..the Moroccan troops are in a defensive position,” the report said. The Algerian report described j the Moroccan soldier in the Sahara as “deprived of supplies, dressed in rags, witness to the death which daily strikes his comrades, paralyzed by fear, he does not understand what he has done to the Western Sahara.” (In Morocco, the gopernment- controlled press and radio did not reply directly to the daily outpouring of accounts of Sahara resistance in .Algiers.
