QUICK TO DEFEND CHARITY Secretary Ufford Takes Issue With Dr Porter of Harvard Denounces Professors Reported Admonition Admonition to Let the Useless Starve Let the Unfit Die Secretary Ufford of the Associated Charities Charities of this city yesterday severely criticised criticised an address delivered in Boston recently recently by Dr W T Porter of the Harvard Harvard Medical School in which Dr Vor - ter It is reported sajd Let the useless starve Let the unfit die Charity is a disgrace The speech startled religious and philanthropic circles in the Hub Secretary Ufford said I cannot believe Dr Pprter said that He must have qualified such an assertion No person in his right mind would make such statements Especially would It be surprising to hear such sentiments from a professor in an Instlution of learning like Harvard University or any other reputable college It is simply unbelievable unbelievable If he did say It as reported then he should te ostracized by every rignt - itinded person Such sentiments cannot be condemned too strongly Dr Samuel H TVoodrow pastor of the First Congregational Church is inclined to take a charitable view of the statements statements of Dr porter I heard a professor once argue that the best way to eliminate drink was to kill off all the drinkers instead of trying to eliminate liquor said Dr Woodrow Nobody will take seriously such sentiments sentiments which are if correctly quoted not a credit to a Harvard professor That there are no such sentiments in the Capital Is evident from the appeat issued yesterday by A Lisner chairman of the joint finance committee of the Associated Charities and the Citizens Relief Relief Association who asks for 12000 which the joint committee needs to carry on the work now being done for the poor in the District This money is absolutely necessary and there is little doubt that the response to the appeal by residents of - Washington will be prompt and generous generous
