Schafer Meadow Airstrip - ice a to and Airstrip concerns To The Editor:...
ice a to and Airstrip concerns To The Editor: Copy of a letter to: U.S. Sen. Lee Metcalf Senate Office Bldg. Washington D.C.20510 . Dear Sen. Metcalf: Regarding: SB-292 I am concerned that the proposed Great Bear Wilderness area would eliminate use of Schafer Meadow Airstrip. This airstrip has existed for over 40 years, during which time it has served the needs of the Forest Service as well as private aircraft owners and commercial operators. Its value was enhanced several years ago by the addition of a public picnic and camping area. This improvement was a joint effort by the Forest Service and interested private groups including the Montana Pilots Association. I feel that "wilderness" classification of this area is too restrictive to best serve the heeds of trie greatest number. Designation as wilderness limits access those with a tot of free time and physically able to hike or ride a horse. The existing Bob Marshall Wilderness provides an adequate 930,000 acre area for this purpose. Regardless of the final classification the surrounding area, I ask yo'ur. assistance in providing for the continuance of Schafer Meadow Airstrip, as a means of access to the area. A to Schafer is a memorable experience itself. If you can work it in to your trip to Montana, it would be my to personally fly you into this airstrip. Just one trip serves to demonstrate the operation of light aircraft there has less adverse effect on the area than walking in or riding a horse. Myron K. Strand Kalispell
